This couse introduces students to the study of language in social contexts. Students will explore the relationship between language and society by examining language variations among different cultures, genders, and societal positions. The course focuses on how language both constructs and is constructed by identity in reference to language and power, vernacular dialects, pidgins and creoles, language and gender differences, and technologies' impact on language use and reception. Prerequisites: Senior Standing or above or by Permission of Instructor. (F;S;SS)
