What are human rights? Who defines this concept and sets its standards? Has the concept changed over time? This course takes an interdisciplinary and global approach to the study human rights. It looks at specific human rights violations of our time, including honor killing, bride burning, genital mutilation, death by stoning, torture and child labor. Students will learn about the social, cultural, economic, political and legal contexts within which certain practices deemed human rights violations take place and be confronted with the ultimate question of Can I judge the practices of people living in other cultures? Prerequisite: None. (F;S)
