Ayesha Swinton

Dr. Ayesha M. Coleman Swinton is an Assistant Professor of Elementary Education at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and a scholar-practitioner recognized for her collaborative leadership across K–12, higher education, and community contexts. With over 20 years in education, she has built a career defined by coalition-building, interdisciplinary partnership, and a deep commitment to advancing equitable and inclusive learning environments.

Dr. Swinton’s work centers on bringing diverse stakeholders together including faculty, students, community organizations, and cross-sector partners to design and implement initiatives that improve educational access and outcomes. Within her department, she collaborates across disciplines including special education, literacy, and science to strengthen programs such as Teaching Fellows, the Master of Arts in Teaching program, the Aggies READ initiative, and clinical field experiences. Her leadership contributes directly to student success and the preparation of culturally responsive educators.

Beyond her department, Dr. Swinton actively engages in cross-college and university-wide collaborations, partnering with faculty in counseling, leadership studies, engineering, nursing, and health sciences to advance innovative, interdisciplinary projects. She has served as Co–Principal Investigator and team lead on multiple grant initiatives, including an awarded AI-powered multilingual health literacy project, demonstrating her capacity to lead complex, collaborative research efforts that integrate technology, equity, and community impact.

A committed community-engaged scholar, Dr. Swinton has established strong partnerships with schools and organizations throughout North Carolina and beyond, creating authentic, practice-based learning opportunities for preservice teachers while supporting community-defined needs. Her leadership extends to service roles within the university and the broader community, including board leadership with the Greensboro History Museum, where she facilitates connections between academic and public audiences.

Known for her relational approach, Dr. Swinton leads with a belief that collaboration is essential to meaningful and sustainable change. She consistently fosters environments where diverse perspectives are valued, collective expertise is leveraged, and shared goals are advanced through trust, reciprocity, and intentional partnership.
