Biography

Dr. Gerard G. Dumancas is a highly accomplished chemist, educator, and research leader with a PhD in Analytical Chemistry from Oklahoma State University (OSU), where he graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA. He earned his BS in Chemistry (cum laude) from the University of the Philippines, where he was recognized as a University, College, and Presidential Leadership Scholar. Early in his career, he received the prestigious 2005 International Eco-Minds Pathfinder Award, representing the Philippines for his innovative proposal to convert cottonseed oil waste into a sustainable diesel fuel alternative. The competition was participated in by 8 countries across the Asia-Pacific region. Dr. Dumancas completed his postdoctoral fellowship at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation and earned a Harvard Bok Teaching Certificate in Higher Education Pedagogy. Upon entering OSU, he was selected as an A&S Doctoral Student Excellence Awardee, recognized as one of the top incoming graduate students in Fall 2007. His research excellence was further acknowledged through multiple awards from the American Oil Chemists’ Society (AOCS), including the Analytical Division Student Award (2009, 2010), the Honored Student Award (2010), and the Hans Kaunitz Award (2010). In 2011, he was named a Tony B. Award recipient, recognized among 51 emerging scientists and engineers worldwide by LabAutomation in Palm Springs, California. Throughout his career, Dr. Dumancas has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and delivered more than 100 presentations at national and international scientific conferences. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the book Arachidonic Acid: Dietary Sources and General Functions (Nova Science Publishers) and has reviewed for leading journals including Journal of Chemometrics, Analyst, Applied Spectroscopy, Microchemical Journal, and Journal of Laboratory Automation. In 2012, he was again honored with the Tony B. Award and named one of 39 rising scientists globally by the Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening (SLAS). That same year, he was selected as one of six global finalists for the ACS/Agricultural and Food Chemistry Division Withycombe-Charalambous Award. His dedication to teaching was also recognized with university-wide finalist honors for the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award in both 2011 and 2012 at OSU. Dr. Dumancas has received seven international and one national research awards from organizations such as Bayer, AOCS, ACS, and SLAS. At Louisiana State University-Alexandria (LSUA), he served as Associate Professor of Chemistry, Huie Dellmon Trust Endowed Professor of Science, Coordinator of Chemistry Programs, and Director of Honors Experience. In 2016, he was selected as a Visiting Scientist at GlaxoSmithKline in Pennsylvania through the PEPI Fellowship and was granted U.S. permanent residency as an Alien of Exceptional Ability in the National Interest. In April 2021, Dr. Dumancas secured two major five-year grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) - the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program and the S-STEM Program totaling nearly $2 million. He has since directed and co-directed multiple NSF initiatives, including the NSF Noyce, S-STEM, and LAMP scholarship programs, generating over $5 million in external research funding. His core research interests focus on developing novel spectroscopic and computational tools with applications in edible oils, food science, and biomedical research. In Spring 2022, he joined the University of Scranton as Associate Professor of Chemistry and Director of the NSF Noyce Program, where he also mentored MS Chemistry students. At Scranton he was awarded the 2023 Provost Excellence Award for Integrating Diversity in Learning and the 2024 Provost Excellence Award in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. He was also the recipient of the 2023 NSF I-Corps Program Award for his research involving the determination of syrup adulterants and geographical and floral origin of honey using chemometrics. At Scranton, he has published 45 manuscripts in ~3 years. In Fall 2024, he was appointed as the Associate Dean of Research and Program Innovation of the Honors College and tenured Professor of Chemistry at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NC A&T). At NC A&T, he has generated 49 publications in one year that includes six books from Springer, CRC Press, and De Gruyter. At NC A&T, he has established several innovative initiatives, including faculty-student research workshops, a faculty research speaker series, research site visitations, service-learning research opportunities, the Computational Research Learning Council Seminar Series in partnership with Sustainable Horizons Institute and US national laboratories, the Honors College Journal of Teaching and Research, and the Honors College Research Symposium, which has trained more than 100 students in research. He has also collaborated with over 100 internal and external stakeholders on curriculum development, research, and other innovative programming initiatives. Dr. Dumancas is also a faculty affiliate member of the Center of Excellence in Cybersecurity Research, Education and Outreach (CREO), the Center for Integrative Health Disparities and Equity Research (CIHDER), and the Department of Nanoengineering via the Joint School of NanoScience and Nanoengineering (graduate faculty affiliate) at NC A&T. He is also a Full Member of the Graduate Faculty at NC A&T.
