Personal profile
Biography
Dr. Hui Yi is an Assistant Professor of Statistics at North Carolina A&T State University, bringing a robust quantitative background from her prior role as an Assistant Research Scientist at the University of Georgia and as a tenured professor at Chang'an University in China. Dr. Yi's research program is dedicated to developing advanced statistical and machine-learning methodologies, with a specialized focus on mixed-methods data integration and innovative survey-sampling designs for disadvantaged, hidden or hard-to-reach populations. Her expertise is evidenced by her role as a Co-Investigator on two multi-million-dollar U.S. Department of State grants (Program to End Modern Slavery, 2022-2025). On these projects, she integrated conventional survey methods with frequentist/Bayesian Network Scale-Up Methods and Respondent-Driven Sampling to assess the prevalence of child trafficking, sex trafficking and labor trafficking. She also supported the design and execution of a large-scale, two-year cluster Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) in Malawi and Zambia to evaluate the efficacy of financial literacy interventions. Her doctoral research at Virginia Tech involved pioneering the application of machine learning for genome-wide association studies, achieving high precision in identifying genetic determinants for complex diseases. She has also served as PI on grants using machine learning to optimize roadway network and pedestrian safety, demonstrating the versatility of her analytical expertise.
