Native of Asheville, NC. BS from Univ of Tenn-Knoxville. JD, MA, PhD (history) from UNC-Chapel Hill. Thesis: "Uneasy Lies the Head that Wears a Crown": Ruling Elites in North Carolina, 1776-1789. Dissertation: James Iredell and the Practice of Law in Revolutionary Era North Carolina [1770-1790]. "The Role of the Judiciary in North Carolina," for Bicentennial of US Constitution, Duke U Office of Continuing Education (1985); "Litigation and Court Records of 200 Years Ago," for National Genealogical Society (1987).
