Dr. Jonovan T. Cooper is a Teaching Assistant Professor and Director of Jazz Studies at North Carolina A&T State University, where he provides academic and artistic leadership for the university’s jazz program. In this role, he directs the University Jazz Ensemble, teaches applied and ensemble courses, and contributes to curriculum development in jazz performance and related studies. His instructional approach emphasizes student-centered, performance-based learning, professional preparation, and historically grounded musicianship.
As an artist-educator, Dr. Cooper integrates professional practice into the academic environment through guest artist residencies, masterclasses, collaborative performances, and high-impact experiential learning opportunities. His work supports student development while contributing to the cultural and artistic mission of the university.
Dr. Cooper is an internationally experienced saxophonist, composer, and bandleader whose creative activity explores the intersection of jazz and African diasporic musical traditions. His scholarship is grounded in performance, composition, and collaborative creative practice, contributing to public performances, original works, and cross-cultural artistic initiatives. He is the founder of the ensemble ትውስታ (tWstÁ), which blends Ethiopian musical heritage with contemporary jazz.
In addition to his teaching and creative activity, Dr. Cooper is actively engaged in university service. He serves as Chair of the Lyceum Committee, providing governance, leadership, and active participation in the planning and delivery of cultural and educational programming that enhances student learning and campus engagement. Through his combined work in teaching, creative activity, and service, Dr. Cooper contributes to student success, cultural enrichment, and the broader mission of North Carolina A&T State University.
