Biography

Roymieco A. Carter, MFA, is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design in the Visual Arts Program at North Carolina A&T State University, a position he has held after a successful career in art direction within the apparel and advertising industries. He earned his Master of Fine Arts from Pennsylvania State University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art and Advertising from Virginia Commonwealth University.

His artistic practice is deeply informed by his professional background, seamlessly blending the strategic principles of design with a strong foundation in fine art. Carter's work explores complex themes of culture, identity, and language, drawing inspiration from his upbringing in the tobacco farmlands of Virginia. He masterfully combines digital and handcrafted techniques, utilizing methods such as collage, calligraphy, drawing, xerography, stenciling, and typography to create thought-provoking visuals.

Beyond his role as an educator and artist, Carter is a prominent voice in the art community. He is a co-founder of The Chop Shop Artists Collective, a group of Black and Brown male artists who came together to create a supportive network for professional and creative growth. The collective's work has been featured in exhibitions, including "Chop Shop: We Are Here" at the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts Culture. Carter's art has also been recognized on an international scale, with his painting "Clotilda" being selected as the promotional image for the NAAHBCU Juneteenth exhibition in China. Through his work, he aims to shape the social narrative around creativity, legacy, and kinship, leaving a lasting impact on the cultural landscape.
