Biography

Dr. Salil Desai is the University Distinguished Professor and the Associate Dean for Research and Innovation in the College of Engineering. He has been the Director of the Center of Excellence in Product Design and Advanced Manufacturing. His expertise is in the areas of smart cyber-physical systems, hybrid additive, nano and bio manufacturing, multiphysics modeling, regenerative tissue engineering, product design and realization. He is a Fellow of the AIMBE, ASME and IISE. His R&D and infrastructure funding exceeds $35 million from NIH, NSF, DoD, DoE, and industry. Desai is recipient of several prestigious awards including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (White House), NSF Career Award, SME’s Most Influential in Smart Manufacturing, UNC Board of Governors Award, Outstanding Investigator Awards from IISE, ASME, ASEE, SME, DoD and ORNL.
