Biography

Dr. Harrison’s research interests are for conducting analyses of microbial genomics, physiology, and health. This work is becoming increasingly transdisciplinary due to the number of growing cross-connections between these areas of study. His research in biological data analysis has been extensively comparative across pathway networks and phenotypic associations, with a goal to increase the speed and frequency by which computational analysis interfaces with experimental investigation. Courses that Dr. Harrison has taught at the university level have been biostatistics, evolutionary biology, immunology, methods in laboratory analysis, microbiome bioinformatics, microbiology, and molecular biology. Dr. Harrison has contributed to various workshops for grant projects and outreach programs, including the AmGen Biotech Experience North Carolina. Dr. Harrison has in addition served as research mentor for many undergraduate and graduate students. Dr. Harrison has a successful track record in multidisciplinary collaborations and for externally funded grants on projects funded by the NIH, NSF and other agencies. Dr. Harrison has served on and chaired multiple committees, is a member of the university’s Faculty Senate and Faculty Senate Executive Committee, has served as his department’s graduate program director (Fall 2019-Spring 2023), and is presently the associate chair of the university’s Department of Biology. Dr. Harrison currently represents the university on the NC BioImpact initiative to create a trained workforce in biotechnology.
