N2 - As globalization intensifies and economic competition grows fiercer, African countries are seeking new avenues to be relevant in the world economy. Through the adoption of new economic development models, these countries hope to diversify their economies and spur economic growth. A strategy that countries could explore for economic development is the pursuit of a policy that systematically and deliberately courts the active participation of members of the African diaspora in the development plans and programs of such countries. This article focuses on diaspora engagement strategy in Ghana for economic development and is divided into three sections. The first section reviews literature on world diaspora and also examines this issue in Africa. Additionally, the section discusses African diaspora in Ghana, specifically, the policies and efforts undertaken to encourage diaspora active involvement in the country. The second section describes potential advantages to be derived from the diaspora engagement strategy. The section also outlines problems likely to result from the diaspora involvement efforts. The final section offers some suggestions to address these potential problems likely to impede the success of the diaspora strategy. © The Author(s) 2012.
