Abstract

Participated as a panelist for AI in Indian Country at the 2026 Reservation Economic Summit (RES), engaging in a national dialogue on the opportunities, challenges, and implications of artificial intelligence for Tribal Nations, Indigenous communities, and the future of Indigenous innovation. The panel brought together leaders from tribal governments, industry, higher education, and nonprofit organizations to explore how artificial intelligence is transforming economies, governance, education, workforce development, and community decision-making across Indian Country.The discussion emphasized the importance of Indigenous leadership in shaping the development, adoption, and governance of emerging technologies. Key topics included artificial intelligence literacy, tribal sovereignty, Indigenous data sovereignty, ethical technology use, workforce development, educational opportunity, economic growth, and the protection of Indigenous knowledge systems. The panel highlighted the need for Indigenous communities to move beyond participation in technological innovation and toward leadership roles that influence the future direction of artificial intelligence and digital transformation.Particular attention was given to preparing the next generation of Indigenous students, professionals, entrepreneurs, and leaders to thrive in technology-driven environments. Discussions explored pathways for increasing Indigenous representation in STEM fields, expanding access to digital learning opportunities, strengthening workforce readiness, and creating culturally responsive approaches to technology education. The panel also addressed the importance of strategic partnerships among Tribal Nations, educational institutions, industry leaders, and governmental organizations in building capacity for responsible AI adoption and innovation.The session examined the role of artificial intelligence in advancing self-determination, supporting economic development, strengthening community resilience, and addressing challenges related to infrastructure, access, governance, and sustainability. Participants explored how AI can be leveraged to improve services, create new economic opportunities, support educational advancement, and foster innovation while maintaining cultural integrity and community values.This panel discussion informs my teaching, research, and service by advancing my work in artificial intelligence, Indigenous education, digital equity, workforce development, STEM pathways, educational leadership, community engagement, and Indigenous leadership. The experience reflects a commitment to supporting Indigenous innovation, expanding educational and economic opportunities, strengthening tribal sovereignty, and ensuring that Indigenous communities are empowered to lead in the development and application of emerging technologies.
