Design for sustainment - A conceptual framework

Abstract

Design for sustainment demands that considerations for reducing sustainment footprint be integral to the planning and management activities during early product development through deployment, logistical support and disposal. For consistent application, a robust, scalable and adaptive framework is required to effectively filter product lifetime information to designers to impact their decisions during redesign or new design cycles; aimed at addressing product lifecycle challenges like maintenance burden reduction, maintenance efficiencies and total product ownership cost. This paper discusses a conceptual framework for synthesizing and presenting product lifetime data in a usable format aimed at substantially reducing product sustainment requirements and footprint.
