Research output: Contribution to conferencePaper

Abstract

Presented Educator Day: Exploration of AISES Programs at the 2025 AISES National Conference, providing educators, administrators, counselors, tribal education leaders, and community stakeholders with an overview of the educational programs, resources, initiatives, and opportunities available through the Advancing Indigenous Science and Engineering Society (AISES). The session highlighted AISES’ mission of substantially increasing the representation of Indigenous peoples in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and careers while promoting educational success, leadership development, and community empowerment. The presentation explored a wide range of AISES programs designed to support Indigenous learners across the educational continuum, including K–12 outreach initiatives, college and university chapters, scholarships, leadership development opportunities, professional development programs, internships, workforce readiness initiatives, and community-based engagement activities. Participants examined how these programs create pathways that connect Indigenous students to educational opportunities, mentorship networks, STEM experiences, and career development resources that support long-term academic and professional success.Particular attention was given to strategies for strengthening Indigenous student recruitment, retention, persistence, and achievement in STEM disciplines. The session emphasized the importance of culturally responsive education, representation, belonging, mentorship, and community engagement in creating supportive learning environments where Indigenous students can thrive. Discussions highlighted the role of educators, families, tribal communities, and community organizations in building strong educational ecosystems that foster student confidence, leadership, innovation, and resilience. The presentation also examined how AISES programs contribute to workforce development, economic mobility, digital literacy, leadership preparation, and community capacity building. Participants explored opportunities for collaboration among schools, tribal nations, higher education institutions, industry partners, nonprofit organizations, and governmental agencies to expand access to educational resources and strengthen STEM pathways for Indigenous learners. This presentation informs my teaching, research, and service by advancing my work in Indigenous education, STEM education, workforce development, educational leadership, community engagement, mentorship, student success, and leadership development. The session reflects a commitment to expanding educational opportunity, strengthening Indigenous representation in STEM fields, supporting culturally responsive educational practices, and creating sustainable pathways that empower Indigenous learners, professionals, and communities to succeed and lead.
