Abstract

The structure of alphanumeric displays has a significant effect on a user's ability to process the information contained in the display. Four characteristics of display design have been identified in literature: overall denhsity, local density, grouping and layout complexity. In this paper, we describe a new method for identifying groups and present a computer program that computers measures of the four characteristics. This software can be used to evaluate the data entry and retrieval efficiency of any formatted display.
