Exploring biomass and biowaste as sustainable feedstocks

Research output: Contribution to journal › Article

Abstract

The use of biomass and biowaste as livestock feed represents a promising strategy for promoting environmentally sustainable animal production. Biomass encompasses organic materials derived directly from plants or animals, including crop residues, forestry byproducts, and dedicated feed crops, all of which possess inherent nutritional value. Biowastes, on the other hand, are byproducts of food processing, agriculture, or animal production, such as fruit and vegetable peels, processing residues, and manure, that often require treatment to enhance their suitability as feed. These resources provide a viable alternative to conventional feedstuffs. This review explores the sustainable incorporation of biomass and biowastes into ruminant diets and examines their effects on animal performance and nutrient utilization. Integrating these materials into feeding regimes can reduce the environmental footprint of livestock operations, lower feed costs, and support a circular economy. Improper disposal of biomass and biowastes contributes to pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, whereas converting them into feed can mitigate such impacts. For instance, the use of crop residues or food industry byproducts as feed diverts waste from landfills and reduces methane emissions from decomposition. The nutritional value of these materials can be improved through processing methods such as ensiling, mechanical or chemical treatments, and extrusion. Such techniques enhance digestibility, break down complex carbohydrates, increase protein content, and improve palatability, making them more suitable for ruminant consumption. Economically, biomass and biowastes are often low-cost or freely available, offering affordable feed options for small-and medium-scale farmers, particularly in regions where feed costs constitute a large share of production costs. In conclusion, utilizing biomass and biowastes as livestock feed offers a multifaceted approach to sustainable agriculture. It addresses environmental concerns by reducing waste and emissions, improving feed efficiency and animal nutrition through processing innovations, and providing economic benefits by lowering reliance on expensive conventional feed resources.
