Generational Power

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaper

Abstract

Presented Generational Power at the 2025 AISES Eastern Regional Conference, exploring how Indigenous communities, families, educators, and leaders cultivate strength, resilience, and opportunity across generations. The presentation introduced Generational Power as a framework for understanding how cultural identity, ancestral knowledge, community values, educational attainment, leadership development, and collective responsibility work together to create sustainable pathways for individual and community success. The session examined how Indigenous peoples have historically leveraged cultural knowledge, resilience, innovation, and community-centered leadership to overcome challenges while preserving identity and advancing opportunities for future generations. Participants explored the ways in which historical experiences, cultural traditions, family structures, mentorship, and community engagement continue to influence educational outcomes, leadership development, workforce readiness, and community well-being. The presentation emphasized that Generational Power is not solely about inheritance but about intentionally creating conditions that enable future generations to thrive.Particular attention was given to the role of education, STEM pathways, mentorship, leadership development, and workforce preparation in strengthening Indigenous communities. Discussions focused on how educators, tribal leaders, families, and community organizations can work collaboratively to support student success, expand educational opportunities, foster belonging, and prepare emerging leaders to address complex challenges while remaining grounded in cultural values and community priorities. The session highlighted the importance of culturally responsive educational practices, intergenerational learning, and community-based approaches that recognize the strengths and assets present within Indigenous communities. The presentation also explored how Generational Power contributes to community resilience, economic development, self-determination, and sustainable growth. Participants were encouraged to consider how their individual actions, leadership practices, and investments in education can create lasting impacts that extend beyond a single generation. The session emphasized the responsibility of current leaders to honor the past, lead effectively in the present, and intentionally prepare future generations for success in an increasingly interconnected and rapidly changing world. This presentation informs my teaching, research, and service by advancing my work in Indigenous education, leadership development, STEM education, workforce readiness, community engagement, mentorship, cultural preservation, and educational equity. The presentation reflects a commitment to empowering Indigenous learners and communities, strengthening pathways to opportunity, promoting intergenerational leadership, and supporting sustainable community development through education, innovation, and culturally grounded leadership practices.
