Abstract
Although there has been an increase over the years, few scholars (Gray, 2015) have explored how HBCUs have [re]positioned to support veterans, servicemembers, and their families. Therefore, the purpose of this chapter is to focus on current veteran-friendly practices within HBCUs and implication for future directions. First, we provide a brief historical overview of the signif- icant contributions of HBCUs and military education. Next, we highlight six HBCUs that have a designation on the 2020–2021 Military Friendly® listing. Finally, we conclude with recommendations for HBCUs to consider in their future efforts to foster, sustain, or enhance the campus environment to affirm veterans, servicemembers, and their families.
