Intensifying arctic cyclone activity

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

The NCEP-NCAR reanalysis from 1948-2002 was used to augment the arctic cyclone climatology and to investigate trends and variability of arctic cyclone activity and their midlatitude relationships. An improved automated cyclone identification and tracking algorithm was developed to detect each cyclone in the study domain north of 30°N. A new integrative index, the cyclone activity index (CAI) was defined to portray both the trend and the variability of cyclone activity. Overall, significant results were obtained.
