Abstract

Mixed-mode bending apparatus is used to measure mixed-mode (Mode I - II) stress state fracture toughness for fiber reinforced composite laminates. This test apparatus is complex and not all laboratories will have or access to the test facility. Therefore, an alternate way of generating the delamination mixed-mode fracture toughness equation is proposed using only three simple tests, namely, double cantilever beam DCB, end notched flexure (ENF) and single leg bending (SLB). The equation is represented by a power law form and the exponent of the equation is determined by the SLB fracture test. The derived equation is validated by comparing with mixed-mode fracture test data as well as other models in the literature.
