Mentoring in Adult and Continuing Education

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to focus on the continuing significance of mentoring to the field of adult and continuing education, extending and updating Hansman’s (2000) chapter on mentoring published in the Wilson and Hays (2000) Handbook of Adult and Continuing Education. Specifically, the intention of this chapter is to expand the understandings and frameworks of mentoring and how they are embedded within many adult and continuing education contexts. The chapter begins with a brief review of mentoring relationships, complexities, power relationships, and mentoring models that frame mentoring in formal and informal adult education contexts. In the conclu- sion, we explore current and potential future mentoring challenges, issues, and research opportunities.
