Abstract

A research was carried out based on the hypothesis that mesoscale convective complexes (MCCs) and a mesovortex (MV) were embedded within an African easterly wave (AEW) that was generated near the Ethiopian Highlands (EH), and eventually led to the genesis of Hurricane Alberto in 2000. Using satellite imagery, this pre-Alberto AEW was traced back to the EH. In addition, it was found that the incipient AEWs for 23 and 34 eastern Atlantic tropical cyclones originated from the EH region during the period 1990-2001. Based on reanalysis data and satellite imagery, it was found that the pre-Alberto disturbance exhibited characteristics of an AEW.
