Abstract
Researchers believe the effects of a poor doctoral experience can be lasting (Shavers & Moore, 2019; Venegas et al., 2021). While faculty may have good intentions, behaviors occur with no awareness. There is no accurate mechanism to monitor faculty misbehavior; therefore, poor behavior will likely continue. Using a phenomenological design, the researchers seek the essence of how Black counselor education graduates experienced their respective institutions. Using HBCUs, PWIs, and HSIs, three themes emerged centered around (1) exposure, (2) real-life exposure, and (3) cultural oasis. The researchers used these themes to explore the need for an antiracist pedagogy.
