Abstract

Picloram (CAS 1918-02-1), a synthetic herbicide belonging to the pyridinecarboxylic acid family is widely used in weed control applications. It is a colorless crystal at room temperature with a chlorine-like odor. The compound is characterized as not expected to be adsorbed to the soil but may leach to groundwater. Further, the chemical is absorbed into the body by inhalation and ingestion causing several adverse effects to living organismic models. This article reviews the environmental fate and behavior of picloram. In addition, its toxicokinetics, acute and chronic toxicity, immunotoxicity, reproductive and developmental toxicity, genotoxicity, carcinogenicity, clinical management, and exposure standards and guidelines are also discussed.
