Problems and Solutions of Point Cloud Mapping for VR and CAVE Environments for Data Visualization and Physics Simulation

Abstract

In this paper, we explore the utilization of point clouds to enhance the visual fidelity and realism of VR environments. A pipeline was successfully developed to take point cloud data, process it through optimization algorithms such as spatial subsampling, and then virtualize it in a VR environment with custom scripted interactivity. Also, a multitude of problems such as frames-per-second (FPS) optimization, nausea reduction, point cloud sparsity minimization and controller interactivity all need to be addressed before progress can be made.
