Abstract

Hybrid epoxy/glass composites with alumina nano particulates are formed by grafting the nanoparticles into either the fabric or the resin with final consolidation by vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM). Functionalized alumina particles with silane coupling agents for better compatibility of alumina with the epoxy resin are investigated. Thermo-physical characterizations indicate an increase in the glass transition temperature with no significant effect on the decomposition temperature of the epoxy. A case study on the potential effect of filtration of the resin dispersed alumina particles during infusion by VARTM is presented. Comparative tensile mechanical behaviors of nano and hybrid composites are discussed.
