Abstract
Presented Rooted in Wellness: Cultivating Native Plants for Health, Culture, and STEM Education in Communities at the 2025 Science for All Summit. This presentation explored the intersection of Indigenous knowledge, environmental stewardship, community wellness, sustainable agriculture, STEM education, and cultural preservation through the cultivation and study of native plants. The session highlighted how native plant initiatives can serve as powerful educational tools that connect learners to science, culture, health, and community while promoting environmental sustainability and place-based learning.The presentation examined the historical and contemporary significance of native plants within Indigenous communities, emphasizing their roles in nutrition, traditional ecological knowledge, cultural practices, environmental conservation, and community well-being. Participants explored how native plant gardens and community-based agricultural projects can provide meaningful opportunities for experiential learning, scientific inquiry, environmental education, and interdisciplinary STEM instruction. The session demonstrated how students can engage in hands-on learning experiences that integrate biology, ecology, agriculture, sustainability, health sciences, and cultural studies.Particular attention was given to the use of culturally responsive and community-centered educational approaches that honor Indigenous knowledge systems while supporting student engagement and academic achievement. The presentation highlighted strategies for developing educational programs that strengthen connections between schools, families, tribal communities, community organizations, and environmental partners. Discussions focused on how native plant initiatives can foster environmental literacy, leadership development, workforce readiness, community engagement, and a greater understanding of sustainable land management practices.The session also explored the relationship between native plants, community health, food systems, biodiversity, climate resilience, and sustainable development. Participants examined how cultivating native species contributes to environmental conservation, supports pollinators and wildlife habitats, promotes responsible stewardship of natural resources, and creates opportunities for community-based solutions to environmental and health-related challenges.This presentation informs my teaching, research, and service by advancing my work in Indigenous education, STEM education, sustainable agriculture, environmental stewardship, community wellness, culturally responsive leadership, and community engagement. The presentation reflects a commitment to integrating traditional knowledge with contemporary educational practices, strengthening community partnerships, promoting environmental sustainability, and empowering learners to become informed leaders and stewards of their communities and natural environments.
