Abstract
Structural racism refers to patterns of systematic discrimination based upon socially defined race. It is conducted via governments, corporations, or social groups, as opposed to individuals. In racialized societies, it appears in virtually every profession, including science. It appears prominently in the applications (what scientific questions are pursued and for whose benefits) as well as the institutions of science (academic appointments, professional societies, and private industry). This article discusses how structural racism operates in American science, as well as ways that it can be redressed.
