The state of literacy in North Carolina

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaper

Abstract

Participated as a panelist for The State of Literacy in North Carolina at the 2026 North Carolina Reading Association Annual Conference, engaging in statewide discussions focused on literacy achievement, educational equity, teacher preparation, student success, and the future of literacy education. The panel brought together educators, researchers, school leaders, and literacy advocates to examine current literacy trends, challenges, and opportunities impacting learners across North Carolina’s diverse educational settings. The discussion explored the critical role of literacy as a foundation for academic achievement, workforce readiness, civic engagement, lifelong learning, and economic mobility. Panelists examined factors influencing literacy outcomes, including access to high-quality instruction, educational opportunity, teacher preparation and professional development, family engagement, community partnerships, evolving literacy standards, and the integration of evidence-based instructional practices. Particular attention was given to addressing achievement gaps, supporting historically underserved populations, and creating equitable pathways to literacy success for all learners. The session emphasized the importance of collaborative leadership and shared responsibility among schools, families, higher education institutions, community organizations, and policymakers in strengthening literacy outcomes statewide. Discussions highlighted innovative approaches to literacy instruction, early intervention strategies, culturally responsive teaching practices, educational technology integration, and the role of continuous improvement processes in supporting student achievement. Participants also examined how literacy development contributes to workforce development, postsecondary success, and long-term community well-being.The panel encouraged educators and leaders to consider literacy not only as an academic priority but also as a critical component of educational equity, social mobility, and community development. Conversations focused on building systems of support that empower learners to become confident readers, writers, communicators, and critical thinkers capable of contributing meaningfully to their schools, workplaces, and communities. This presentation informs my teaching, research, and service by strengthening my work in educational leadership, literacy development, teacher preparation, educational equity, community engagement, student success, workforce readiness, and continuous improvement. The experience reflects a commitment to advancing educational opportunity, improving outcomes for diverse learners, supporting strong educational institutions, and fostering collaborative partnerships that strengthen literacy achievement across North Carolina and beyond.
