Using Biodegradable Polymer Experiments to Examine Structure-Function Relationships

Research output: Contribution to journalArticle

Abstract

A biodegradable polymer laboratory unit was developed to examine structure-functions relationships. The laboratory unit was designed to provide an enquiry-based educational experience to students by exposing a variety of polymer samples to simulated biomass environments. Two biodegradable polymers polyvinyl alcohols (PVOH), and polylactic acid (PLA) were studied, biodegradation experiments were performed in two environments such as slurry and compost. The result suggested that increasing the concentration of PVOH will provide more carbon for microbial growth consequently increasing the rate of reaction and biological activity of the microorganisms.
