Abstract
Presented Using Cognitive Computing and Analytics to Enable Personalized Learning at the 2016 iNACOL National Conference, exploring how emerging technologies, data analytics, and cognitive computing systems can be leveraged to create more personalized, adaptive, and learner-centered educational experiences. The presentation examined the transformative potential of advanced technologies to support individualized instruction, improve student outcomes, enhance educator decision-making, and expand educational opportunities for diverse learners. The session introduced participants to the concepts of cognitive computing, predictive analytics, machine learning, and data-driven instructional practices, demonstrating how these technologies can help educators better understand student needs, learning patterns, strengths, and areas for growth. Participants explored how educational data can be used to personalize instruction, identify learning gaps, support intervention efforts, and provide targeted resources that promote student engagement and academic achievement. Discussions emphasized the importance of using technology to enhance rather than replace meaningful teaching and learning experiences.Particular attention was given to the role of technology in supporting educational equity, accessibility, and student success. The presentation highlighted how personalized learning systems can provide flexible pathways for learners with diverse backgrounds, abilities, and educational needs while increasing opportunities for engagement and achievement. Participants examined how cognitive computing tools can support differentiated instruction, competency-based education, and learner agency while promoting more responsive educational environments. The session also explored the ethical, organizational, and leadership considerations associated with implementing advanced technologies in educational settings. Discussions focused on responsible data use, privacy, transparency, digital literacy, and the importance of maintaining human-centered approaches to educational innovation. Participants considered how educational leaders can strategically integrate technology into instructional systems while supporting educator capacity, organizational effectiveness, and continuous improvement. The presentation contributed to broader conversations surrounding educational technology, innovation, workforce readiness, artificial intelligence, and the future of learning. By examining the intersection of technology and education, the session encouraged educators and leaders to embrace data-informed decision-making and innovative practices that prepare students for success in a rapidly evolving digital economy. This presentation informs my teaching, research, and service by advancing my work in educational technology, artificial intelligence, personalized learning, educational leadership, workforce development, data analytics, digital equity, and instructional innovation. The presentation reflects a commitment to leveraging emerging technologies responsibly to improve educational outcomes, expand opportunities for learners, and create more inclusive, adaptive, and future-focused learning environments.
