Abstract
Presented What Are You Tweeting? at the 2022 NC PRIMA Conference, a professional development session focused on responsible social media use, digital communication, organizational branding, leadership presence, and the impact of online engagement in professional settings. The presentation examined how social media platforms influence public perception, organizational reputation, stakeholder engagement, and professional credibility, emphasizing the importance of intentional and ethical communication in an increasingly connected digital environment.The session explored the opportunities and challenges associated with social media use by educators, public sector employees, organizational leaders, and professionals. Participants examined how digital communication can strengthen community engagement, expand access to information, support professional networking, and promote organizational transparency while also considering the risks associated with misinformation, inappropriate communication, reputational harm, and ineffective online engagement. Discussions focused on balancing personal expression with professional responsibility and maintaining credibility in both public and professional spaces.Particular attention was given to digital citizenship, communication ethics, leadership visibility, organizational messaging, and the strategic use of social media as a tool for collaboration, relationship-building, and public engagement. Participants explored best practices for creating meaningful content, engaging diverse audiences, fostering constructive dialogue, and utilizing social media platforms to support organizational goals and community outreach efforts. The session emphasized the importance of thoughtful communication, cultural awareness, and professional accountability when interacting in digital environments.The presentation also examined the evolving role of technology in workforce development, leadership, and public communication. Participants discussed how social media literacy contributes to professional growth, lifelong learning, and effective stakeholder engagement while supporting broader goals related to workforce readiness, organizational effectiveness, and community development. The session encouraged attendees to leverage digital platforms responsibly while embracing opportunities for innovation, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.This presentation informs my teaching, research, and service by advancing my work in digital literacy, educational technology, leadership development, workforce readiness, communication, organizational effectiveness, and community engagement. The presentation reflects a commitment to helping individuals and organizations navigate digital environments responsibly, strengthen professional communication practices, and utilize technology as a tool for education, collaboration, and positive social impact.
