Abstract
Although there has been tremendous progress in closing the graduation gap between black and white collegiate athletes, there is still a troubling gap that means too many athletes are leaving college unprepared when their eligibility ends. Some black student athletes are neglected by the advisers, professors, counselors, and coaches who should be helping them to transition into life after collegiate sport. However, too many student-athletes themselves are meandering through the collegiate system without initiative, guidance, and vision. To prepare for the transition, student-athletes must understand and acknowledge that not everyone can proceed to a professional sports career, and they need to take charge of their own futures.
