Abstract

Presented Widgetal to Digital: Procurement in the Age of Content at the 2015 Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) National Conference, exploring how educational institutions can adapt procurement practices to meet the evolving demands of digital learning, educational technology, and content-driven instructional environments. The presentation examined the shift from traditional procurement models focused primarily on physical goods and equipment toward strategic approaches that support digital resources, technology ecosystems, instructional content, and innovative learning environments.The session explored the changing landscape of educational procurement as schools and districts increasingly invest in digital curriculum, learning management systems, cloud-based technologies, educational software, online learning resources, and data-driven instructional tools. Participants examined how educational leaders and school business officials can develop procurement strategies that align technology investments with instructional goals, student learning needs, workforce readiness priorities, and long-term organizational sustainability. Discussions emphasized the importance of viewing procurement as a strategic function that directly influences educational quality, innovation, and operational effectiveness.Particular attention was given to financial stewardship, technology planning, vendor partnerships, and data-informed decision-making. The presentation highlighted strategies for evaluating digital resources, assessing return on investment, managing technology lifecycles, and ensuring that procurement decisions support educational outcomes while maximizing organizational resources. Participants explored how collaborative planning among instructional leaders, technology staff, finance officers, and community stakeholders can strengthen purchasing decisions and improve organizational alignment.The session also addressed broader issues related to digital transformation, educational equity, infrastructure development, and access to high-quality learning resources. Participants discussed how strategic technology procurement can support personalized learning, expand educational opportunities, increase operational efficiency, and prepare students for success in a digital economy. The presentation encouraged leaders to embrace innovation while maintaining accountability, transparency, and a focus on student-centered outcomes.This presentation informs my teaching, research, and service by advancing my work in educational leadership, school finance, educational technology, digital transformation, organizational effectiveness, strategic planning, workforce development, and innovation. The presentation reflects a commitment to helping educational institutions leverage resources strategically, embrace emerging technologies, strengthen digital learning environments, and create sustainable systems that support student achievement and organizational excellence.
