Abstract
Presented You Can’t Lead a School from Behind Your Desk at the 2019 North Carolina Charter School Conference, focusing on the importance of visible, engaged, and relationship-centered leadership as a catalyst for school improvement, student success, and organizational effectiveness. The presentation challenged educational leaders to move beyond traditional administrative functions and embrace leadership practices that prioritize direct engagement with students, educators, families, and community stakeholders.The session explored how effective school leaders create positive school cultures by being present in classrooms, hallways, community events, and other learning environments where meaningful relationships are developed. Participants examined leadership strategies that promote trust, transparency, collaboration, and shared accountability while strengthening communication and fostering a sense of belonging among students, staff, and families. Discussions highlighted the importance of understanding the lived experiences of stakeholders and using those insights to inform decision-making, resource allocation, and school improvement efforts.Particular attention was given to instructional leadership, educator support, organizational culture, and continuous improvement. The presentation emphasized that leaders who actively engage with teaching and learning processes are better positioned to support educator growth, identify barriers to student success, and implement strategies that improve academic achievement and student well-being. Participants explored approaches to data-informed leadership, professional learning, mentoring, stakeholder engagement, and community partnership development as essential components of effective leadership practice.The session also addressed the role of leadership in advancing educational equity, workforce readiness, and community engagement. Participants discussed how collaborative leadership models can create opportunities for innovation, strengthen organizational resilience, and improve outcomes for diverse student populations. The presentation reinforced the idea that leadership is fundamentally about service, relationships, and creating conditions that empower others to succeed.This presentation informs my teaching, research, and service by advancing my work in educational leadership, organizational effectiveness, school improvement, stakeholder engagement, leadership development, community partnerships, and student success. The presentation reflects a commitment to preparing leaders who foster strong educational institutions through visibility, collaboration, trust-building, and a relentless focus on creating opportunities for learners, educators, and communities to thrive.
